History

Steve Chang established the Trend Micro company with his wife, Jenny Chang, and his sister Eva Chen. The company was founded after the sale of Steve Chang’s copy protection dongle to Rainbow Technologies, a United States-based company. After establishing the company, its founder moved its headquarters to Taipei, China. 

When 1992 came, the company acquired a Japanese software firm in order to build Trend Micro Devices. Additionally, it also created its headquarters in Tokyo. Later it made a partnership with Intel, a CPU maker brand. So, under this agreement, they made anti-virus products for the local area network, which were sold under the Intel brand. Intel used to pay royalties to Trend Micro for the sale of the LANDesk Virus Protect in Europe and the United States. On the other hand, Trend Micro had to give royalties to Intel for sales in Asia. 

Furthermore, in 1993, Trend Micro products were bundling the network operating system of Novell. By the year 1996, both companies made an agreement in which Trend Micro was allowed to market the ServerProtect Product globally under its own name along with Intel's LANDesk brand. Additionally, in 1998, under the ticker (stock symbol) 4704, Trend Micro was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Plus, in July 1999, the company started trading on the United States-based NASDAQ stock exchange in July 1999. 

In 2004, then-CEO of the company Steve Chang made up his mind to divide the responsibilities of the CEO and Chairman of the company. As a result, Eva Chang, the co-founder of Trend Micro, took over the position of CEO. However, Steve Change became the company’s chairman. This company bought the Braintree, Massachusetts-based anti-spyware company InterMute. The deal was done for 15 million US dollars. 

Moreover, in 2005, a San Jose, California-based anti-spam software developer company, Kelka, was acquired by the company. The Kalka company was famous for IP filtering software and Mail Abuse Prevention System (MAPS), which was best for blocking spam and phishing scams for internet service providers. Later in 2007, This company acquired the HijackThis freeware antispyware program. The deal was done with the creator of the software for an undisclosed amount. 

Additionally, in 2010, it acquired a cloud-based storage service company Humyo based in Leeds, England. Plus, to offer mobile security services, the company acquired Mobile Armour, which was the developer of the full disk, file and folder, and removable media encryption. From 2010 to 1017, the company acquired a variety of companies and had a partnership with several forms to increase the reach of its services and improve its quality. 

Afterward, in 2018, Trend Micro participated in the Cybersecurity Tech Accord. It was a public agreement between the companies to save the customer from the dangers of attacks by the nation states and cybercriminal groups. Trend Micro and HITRUST made an announcement in the same year that both companies were going to make an agreement to release a new centre in order to offer advanced cyber risk management services. Additionally, in that very same year, this company and Moxa Inc. formed TXOne Networks, a joint venture corporation for emphasizing the security needs present in the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT).
