History

Originally, Bitdefender software was available as AVX (Antivirus Expert) from 1996 to 2001. The AVX was developed by SOFTWIN. However, in 2004 the name of AVX was changed to Bitdefender. Softwin crested in 1990 and was among the first IT company in post-communist Romania. The cause of the development of this company was the tremendous growth of viruses in computers. 

Additionally, in 2001 when the subsidiary of Bitdefender was created, the AVX was rebranded by the name of Bitdefender. In 2004 the first offices of the company were built in US, UK, and Germany. Plus, in 2011, the company worked toward expanding its reach to the middle east, and in 2015, it opened its offices in Nordics Regions in Denmark. 

Furthermore, in 2007 the company's shareholding came under the Axxess Capital Investment Fund. After that, Bitdefender became the individual business Entity with the entry of external capital. In 2015, with Bitdefender BOX and IoT security services, the company made a new consumer product category. 

Additionally, in 2017, it acquired the French partner Profil Technology Source and made its first prominent acquisition. Plus, in the same year company’s 30% stakes were bought by the British fund Vitruvian. After the transaction, the value of the Bitdefender became $600 million. 

Through the acquisition of the asset from the business partner SMS eTech, it created a subsidiary in Australia in 2018. Additionally, it owns Redshocks, a network, and behavioral security analytics company. And in 2019, the company opened its Security Operation Center in San Antonio, Texas.

In 2021, the company disclosed its extended detection and response platform (XDR) to accelerate response action, threat validation, and remediation. It helps business customers get incident context and visibility during the investigation.
