Q1: Please Choose Your ESET Product:

Antivirus Blocking System Restore

System Restore is a handy backup feature that is integrated into newer versions of the Windows OS. The feature creates copies of files before system changes happen and lets you reverse those changes to the operating system. These changes happen when you install a new driver or update Windows. However, there are times when System Restore fails. One of these reasons can be due to the ESET antivirus. This content will give you all the information on fixing the ESET Antivirus blocking system restore issue.

Solution 1: Boot your computer in Safe mode.

  1. Click on the Start button and head to Settings.
  2. Click Update & Security> Recovery.
  3. Go to Advanced startup, and select Restart now.
  4. Select Troubleshoot from the Choose an Option screen, then click Advanced options.
  5. Go to Startup Settings and click Restart.
  6. Once your computer restarts, you'll see a list of options.
  7. Select 4 or F4 to boot your System in Safe Mode.
  8. When your System is in Safe Mode, click Start.
  9. Head to the search field box and type System Restore.
  10. Click Create a restore point and hit the System Restore button.
  11. Then click Next.
  12. Select a restore point that you created before experiencing the problem.
  13. Click Next, followed by Finish.

Solution 2: Perform an Automatic Repair in Windows Recovery Tool.

  1. Insert Windows DVD or System Repair Disc into your computer.
  2. From the installation media, boot the Windows Technical Preview.
  3. When you boot, a black screen with grey text reads Press any key to boot from CD or DVD. So, press any key.
  4. Select the right Time and Keyboard type.
  5. Tap Repair your computer.
  6. From the blue Choose an Option screen, select Troubleshoot> Advanced options.
  7. From the Advanced boot option, select Automatic Repair.
  8. Follow the prompt's instructions, and windows will search your hard drive for problems.
  9. Lastly, Windows will verify that all required files are intact.
  10. Automatic Repair detects and fixes any problems that block System Restore.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Other than ESET, Windows System Restore Failure can be caused due to Software incompatibility issues. Some Windows applications do not function or roll back properly with the Windows System Restore point. It can also be due to insufficient System Restore Space. If you cannot create restore points, check to see if Windows has dedicated enough space for the task. If you created a restore point while running any Windows application incompatible with System Restore, the restore point might be corrupt.

To force a System Restore on your System, follow the steps mentioned below:
  1. Open the Windows Start menu and search for the Recovery app and open it.
  2. Click the Open System Restoration option and click Next.
  3. Choose the restore point you want to use and click Next again.
  4. Confirm your restore point and click Finish.

To manually create restore points, follow the steps mentioned below:
  1. Type " Control Panel " in the Windows search bar, type "Control Panel, " and hit Enter.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the Control Panel window in the search box, type "Recovery" and press "Enter."
  3. In the search result list, click "Recovery."
  4. Once the Advanced Recovery Tools list appears, click "Configure System Restore."
  5. Click the "Create" button in the System properties window.
  6. When the pop-up window appears, enter the new restore point's name and click "Create."
  7. After Windows creates the new restore point, click "Close."
  8. Click the "Choose a different restore point" option in the Restore System Files and Settings window, then click "Next."
  9. In the next window, you will see the name of the restore point you created.
  10. After verifying that the new restore point exists, click "Cancel."

You can troubleshoot this error using System File Checker (SFC) and Microsoft Malicious Tool (MRT). First, you must run the Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool to fix the System Restore error. If that doesn't fix your problem, then perform an SFC scan. It scans all protected system files and replaces the incorrect versions with genuine ones.

ESET offers optimum protection against all kinds of threats and has the lowest impact on memory usage and system performance compared to other antivirus solutions. It means your System won't hang or freeze when ESET antivirus scans it. It works great with Windows 10 and 11 and even runs smoothly on older versions of Windows. If you think your System is slow, it is for another reason.
